When I retired from my first career, nobody handed me a manual on how to manage money differently.

For decades I had a paycheck coming in on a predictable schedule. Bills went out, the paycheck came in, and the math was straightforward. Then suddenly the income side of that equation changed—Social Security, maybe a pension, maybe some savings—and the old way of thinking about money stopped working quite as cleanly.

If you’re living on a fixed income, you already know what I mean. Every dollar has to work harder than it used to, and the margin for error is smaller.

I’ve tried several of these apps personally. Here’s my honest take on the ones worth your time.

The Apps Worth Considering

Simplifi by Quicken — My Top Pick for Most Seniors. Cost: $3.99/month. The dashboard gives you a clear picture of your monthly spending in about 30 seconds. Clean interface, reliable bank connections, US-based customer support. Best for seniors who want a straightforward, reliable monthly budget overview without complexity.

Monarch Money — Best for Couples. Cost: $14.99/month. Built for two people to use simultaneously. Both partners see the same accounts, the same budget, and the same spending in real time on their own devices.

YNAB (You Need a Budget) — Most Powerful. Cost: $14.99/month. Uses zero-based budgeting where every dollar gets assigned a job. Steep learning curve but transformative for those who commit. Start with Simplifi if you just want to see where money goes.

Free Option: Mint shut down in early 2024. Closest free replacement is Credit Karma’s spending tracker. At $3.99/month, Simplifi is close enough to free that I’d recommend it over a clunky free alternative.

The Budgeting Basics That Matter More Than Any App

Know your fixed monthly income to the dollar. List every recurring monthly expense. Build a small emergency buffer — even $1,000 set aside for unexpected expenses changes the stress level of an unexpected bill dramatically.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the easiest budgeting app for seniors on Social Security? Simplifi by Quicken at $3.99/month — clearest monthly budget overview, connects to most banks automatically.

Is it safe to connect my bank account to a budgeting app? Reputable apps use bank-level encryption and read-only access — they can see transactions but cannot move money. Stick with well-known established apps.

What happened to the Mint budgeting app? Mint shut down in early 2024. Former users have largely migrated to Simplifi, Monarch Money, or Credit Karma’s free tracker.
